France, Germany Not Ready to Back U.S. Draft on Iraq
Thu September 4, 2003 10:09 AM ET

DRESDEN (Reuters) - French President Jacques Chirac and German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder said Thursday they were not ready to accept U.S. proposals that could lead to a new United Nations resolution on Iraq.

"We are ready to examine the proposals but they seem quite far from what appears to us the primary objective, namely the transfer of political responsibility to an Iraqi government as soon as possible," Chirac told a joint news conference.
