His keynote address to the American people, watched live by millions around the world, saw the president at his cringe-making worst.

In the glare of the TV cameras, he grimaced, sighed, rambled and even chuckled under his breath, before saying he could not think of a mistake he had made since the September 11 attacks.

American pundits were far from impressed by the performance of their leader, who has control of America's nuclear weapons at his fingertips.

One website even went so far as to ask if Bush was drunk.

It said his stuttering and loss of coherence gave the impression that the president, a recovering alcoholic, had fallen off the wagon.
