September 10, 2003 -- ARNOLD the non-governor. Political sharpies, half-Dems, half-GOPniks, some from Los Angeles, some from New York, took a vote at a friendly dinner table. All said he'll blow it.
A knowledgeable Californian - yes, there are such things - said California's next Gov is (open the envelope) . . . Gray Davis!

This uncharismatic flop of a chief executive - whose popularity plopped so low as to invite a recall - will retain the office, they say, by a skinny margin. Due not to accomplishments or new faux image but to his faux opposition.

When Bill Simon dropped out, the Republicans, with fewer votes than the Democrats, hoped state Sen. Tom McClintock would follow so the party could support Arnold. But McClintock's conservative followers can't buy Arnold's liberal takes. So, McClintock stays in and cops 15 percent of the vote.

To woo GOP voters, Arnold makes just enough conservative noises to alienate whatever Democrats he could have blotted up. His failure to debate, plus his equivocation on certain issues, is terminating the Terminator.

This leaves Cruz Bustamante who, in hustling the liberal constituency, favors bizarre propositions like driver's licenses to illegal aliens so they can get jobs. Who's trying to overcome his recent use of the "n" word. Whose $2 million acceptance from Indian tribe lobbyists for tax-free casinos resonated negatively.

So what's that leave? The pallid not-so-colorful graying Davis.

This is the gal who broke clinton's alliance with davis weeks before the broad media did...
