Washington D.C. – Senators John McCain (R-AZ) and Joe Lieberman (D-CT) and Representatives Frank Wolf (R-VA, 10) and Tom Lantos (D-CA, 12) will hold a press conference on Thursday, March 3, to announce the introduction of the Advance Democratic Values, Address Nondemocratic Countries and Enhance Democracy Act of 2005 or the ADVANCE Democracy Act of 2005.

The legislation is designed to reaffirm that the promotion of democracy, freedom and fundamental rights constitutes an essential element of U.S. foreign policy. It also will strengthen the ability of the State Department to promote democracy, particularly with respect to non-democratic countries. In addition, it will require a study of U.S. democracy assistance to ensure its efficiency and effectiveness.
