Let's not forget that this administration has a huge need to create a "bad guy", for various reasons. One is to whip up public anger, to justify decisions to go to war, attack other countries. If it wasn't Osama, it would be somebody else. As a matter of fact, it was. Notice how he was promptly forgotten as soon as a new convenient "bad guy" was located.
This administration has a huge vested interest in keeping US citizens angry at someone, in this case Osama. It takes the focus away from domestic problems. It scared the bejeezus out of most folks, and they allowed a lot of their freedoms to be taken away "for the sake of security". For a while, at least, people forget about the dismal state of the economy, and unemployment.
