Republicans and the "sanctity of marriage"
Advertisements [?]
I'm sorry to start another thread related to Terri Schiavo, especially for my first one. However, something has occurred to me that I don't think many have said. Here goes...

The republicans made the sanctity of marriage a big deal in last November's election. While they were mainly focused on preventing same-sex marriages, there were some talking about how special the bond is between husband and wife. Take, for example, Mike Huckabee, Governor of Arkansas, who turned his marriage into a special "covenant marriage".

So, there has been a lot of lip service paid to how special marriage is, something I happen to agree upon (but not on the freaky covenant marriage stuff - I think all marriages are created equal). Michael Schiavo is Terri's husband and the bond between them is supposedly one of the most special ones that can be made. The republicans claim that this gives the spouse special rights, both legally and spiritually ("The two shall become one flesh"). It is hypocritical for the republicans to turn around and say that a husband does not have the right and responsibility to decide what is best for his wife when she can no longer decide for herself.
