I think the only way to view him is as a human being, with all the faults and strengths of any human.
He had his strong points and his negative. It is unfortunate that he did not use his pulpit to bring the church more in line with modern reality. To fight against oppression, poverty, and injustice but excuse bigotry of certain people because of their sexual orientation is not tolerant or acceptable. It also is understandable that he opposed abortion but to oppose the distribution of contraceptives ultimately led to the deaths of many.
Unfortunately from what I've heard the next Pope may be further to the right, which will be a disservice to the church and its followers.
