Franken, invitro, and stem cell research

Heard Al Franken ask why the anti-stem cell research people are not protesting invitro fertilization. That is a good question. After all, with the invitro process there are many eggs fertilized to get one baby(hopefully). The "leftover" zygotes get frozen or discarded.

I don't know very much about stem cell research but wouldn't it be these discarded and/or frozen cells that they would be using? Are these what Bu$hCo has forbidden research with? What is the big damn deal anyway? Why can't these be used?
