Ike had the experience of architecting the war effort and mobilizing the nation's resources for a world war that lasted half a decade and tested the nation's resolve. nothing in Clark's background is remotely comparable.

It ain't even primary time yet. It'll all sort itself out next year.

a year is not much time to do what needs to be done. the smart candidates, who had real political experience, know that and got a running start long ago.

moreover, candidates like Dean have been not only building their own campaigns, but building up the party. while Clark was gazing at his navel for months trying to work up the courage to admit he was a democrat.
