"string of words" like "bank robery Texas" is used to search a set of files. The phrase has to match up and you get articles in a set order, like first found to last or vis a versa.

A "full text database" allows you to search the text of all files for terms or those with a close meaning and present documents by "relevance" -- how often the terms occur in proportion to the size of the document.

A "full text database" with "field searches" lets you do either a full text search or allows you to search specific fields in the database like state, year, age of perpetrator, etc.

He had the oldest, clumsiest database system around. Not good when you're trying to stay ahead of the bad guys.
