We are a long way from seeing the end of this fiasco. After all we've been through in the past 5 years I try not to get my hopes up too high at any one Bush snafu, but the fact that his numbers are in free-fall certainly brings a smile to my face.
As for fantasies of a Kerry presidency instead of a Bush second term, I have my doubts about how much he would have been able to un-do in this short amount of time. Kerry did not commit himself to immediate withdrawal from Iraq, for one thing. Kerry would have inherited a badly-damaged FEMA, for another, though I'm sure he would have moved far faster to respond to the drowning of New Orleans.
Most of all, though, the Bush cabal has been busy 24/7 dismantling core structures and programs of the federal government. They have been very, very focused on their agenda, and Bush has signed into law a record number of Executive Orders, which never go through the Congress. It would take an equally-determined and focused Democratic administration to even begin to repair the damage; they would have to have staff dedicated to ferreting out and evaluating every change Bush made, every function "privatized."
My own fantasy, my hope, is that from time to time in the years since 2000, there are just a few Supreme Court justices who wake at 2:00 a.m. in a cold sweat over what they did.
