from preschool age through about 12-13yo. They originally started with dolls that were all historical characters, each coming with a series of books telling their life stories. They've since branched out to include "American Girl Today" dolls, where the doll can be ordered to match the girl's hair color, skin color, etc, and "Bitty Babies" for younger girls and some other lines as well. They also sell books that deal with a wide range of topics such as how to deal with friendship issues, how to take care of your body, and fluff stuff like decorating your room. Their "Care and Keeping of You" book was a great way of talking to my daughter about getting her period and all that stuff.
A lot of their dolls, etc, can be outrageously expensive, which can be off putting, but I like their message of empowering girls to be the best they can be.
