You want some proof? (and even though this is anecdotal evidence, I KNOW it as FACT for more reasons than this).
For example: How come when you go buy a birthday card, you get coupons for baby food? (Because in previous purchases you've bought 'baby items' that indicate you probably have a young one at home. It's in the database they access with your card).
Another example: You've purchased allergy products before, a coupon pops out to try a new antihistimine product....it goes on and on....and it's not coincidence. Those coupons are all tailored to that individual card users purchasing habits.
on edit adding: You think the 70-something woman/man behind you in line got baby food coupons? No, they got 'Depends' coupons that you would NEVER get. How does the store know?????
