29. We need to shame them.
I know, it goes against the progressive grain, but we need to make it absolutely shameful to hold the view of "I got mine, and the rest of you go to hell." I am convinced that most are just bandwagon folks. They support whomever they perceive are on the winning team. So the best way to take them down is through ridicule and direct confrontation. Look at the way George Galloway does it. We all need to adopt at least some of the willingness to stand up and say, "ENOUGH!" This includes the polite religiosity. We need to stand up for every position, especially atheists, Muslims, and Pagans--at school board and PTA meetings, at children's clubs such as Scouts and sports teams, art museums and certainly in local politics. We need to support living wage laws VOCIFEROUSLY and we need to shout down ordinances such as the no-sleeping laws they put in place to eliminate the homeless. We need to DEMAND GLBT rights--marriage, adoption, survivorship, all of it. We need to stand up and walk the line for labor--the grocery workers, the teachers, the firefighters, the farm workers. And we need to do it boldly, without a hint of embarassment or hesitation. Most of all, we need to PAY ATTENTION to these small offices and vote and watch the voting mechanisms and RUN for offices ourselves or encourage others to run. And, of course, we need to MARCH on the MEDIA, not giving an inch, and KEEP IT UP until the tide is turned.
