I am the poster-child for Pro-lifers...

I am adopted. And yet I support the rights of women to choose abortion if they decide to do so. As a Freeper would say, "Whaaaa?!"

I am 24 years old (almost). I was raised by wonderful people, starting at the tender age of nine days. I do not know who my biological parets are, and to be perfectly honest, I could care less. So, in light of the fact that I was a PRIME candidate for abortion, why do I support this right?

Easy. I've seen what happens to unwanted children as they grow up. An unwanted child is another mouth to feed. Another person that must be clothed, protected, provided for. Some people become pregnant and simply CANNOT provide for their unborn child, both pre and post-natally. Why should someone bring a child into the world who will never be truly wanted, let alone appreciated? Simply because sperm and ovum melded? I think not.

A more brilliant DU'er than I once said (rather succinctly), "Republicans: Life begins at conception, and ends at birth." They didn't take it far enough, on many fronts. First of all, both sperm and "eggs" are alive to begin with. It isn't as if two inert components "magically" become a thinking, living, viable person as soon as they merge, nor is it the case that said entity is thinking, in any meaningful sense of the term.

Second, why is it that the lives of those who have been born some time ago don't seem to matter to the anti-abortionists (pro-lifers)? I mean, how the hell is one, "pro-life" if they support pointless wars of conquest? But I digress.

Why am I pro-life? I have known MANY people who grew up in HORRIBLE situations, only because their parents "didn't believe" in abortion. Beatings, sexual abuse, emotional distance to the point of lasting harm, you name it these unfortunates have suffered through it all. Is it better to live a life of hell rather than never live at all? That's not for me to decide. But I would submit, for your consideration, that the so-called "culture of life" focuses on the unborn (who aren't truly 'alive' until month six) at the expense of the post-born.

What's wrong with this picture? Everything. The solution? There isn't one. Just rest assured that this adopted individual supports the pro-choice position, as he has seen what happens when it is not an option.

I know that I'm preaching to the proverbial "converted." Sorry to be so disjointed, organization was never my strong suit. Any thoughts?
