4. The Christian Right
is neither.

As I noted about a week ago in a posting of my own, the radical religious right is more about a power base than they are about practicing a faith or religion. Those who support this power base use Jesus Christ as a weapon, a tool to keep people in line. They preach intolerance, they preach hypocrisy, and moreover, they wouldn't know Jesus Christ if they tripped over him in the Bowery. To them, it's not about compassion, it's not about values, and it's not about the golden rule. It's about waging war on non-Christians, it's about waging war on anyone who is different than they are, it's about hatred, bigotry and control.

The United States is the only first world power with this monkey on its back. Every other major power in the world runs a secular government. Every other major power has put and kept religion in its place. How ironic that those who left Europe in the 17th century to escape religious persecution are now those trying to keep religious freedom from blossoming!

They may say they're "Christian" but you can tell a real Christian from a RRR member: if you say something to defend a Moslem, if you defend a Pagan, or if you say something nice about an atheist, they will immediately attack you. If they don't, they probably believe in the sanctity of religious freedom for all, and you can bet they're more of a real Christian. I can't discuss anything with my best friend, because she's been indoctrinated into the fundies so totally. She firmly believes that Islam is all about worshipping an evil god, she firmly believes that atheists are going to hell, and she has been completely taken over by both the Left Behind mythology, and creationism falsehoods. She is constantly praying for me because I have become more secular as I grow older. I only wish I could pray for her, but it won't do any good--she's been swept up by the movement and won't back down.
