I read somewhere that Americans didn't give two hoots about Vietnam until about 1967 or so.

Additionally there are numerous studies that show that Americans perception of military success and failure has less to do with casualities and more to do with a sense of mission and exit strategy.

Look at Somalia, what was it 18 dead(from Blackhawk down not other)? and the whole operation was shutdown.
