Superman: Red Son (Soviet Superman)

I have not read comic books in YEARS. When I was a kid I loved them and about 9 years I stopped reading them. Since then I've never been much of a sci-fi fan or comic fan. I've seen the Spider-man and X-Men movies and enjoyed them and that's about it.

Anyway, a friend of mine just let me borrow Superman: Red Son saying I had to read it and that it was right up my alley and damn was he right.

The premise of the story is that Superman's rocket lands on a commune in the Ukraine instead of America and he is raised as a Communist. He is taken into the Soviet system where he becomes Stalin second-in-command and eventually, with hesitation, the leader of the Soviet Union. I'm not going to ruin the story but I just want to say that the book is brilliant! The writer (Mark Miller) presents an evenhanded view of the Cold War with Superman still doing what he believes is right. At the same time he is doing things that are bad for the individual but in the end adds to the "common good." Safety in exchange for security. It's a great commentary on the current world political climate as well. This ain't your daddy's Superman story.
