4. POD is amazing.
I've got a POD v.1 for recording (tried it and bought it when it first came out), as well as a Line6 Flextone II amp for gigs. And I have a DigiTech RP6 multi-effects board that I run through the effects loop on the FlexTone for the whammy and extra chorus/flange effects.

I've got a number of amps - a great-sounding Marshall 50, a Laney 50 combo, a Sovtek MIG-21 head - and while I wouldn't get rid of any of them, I don't use them any more. The FlexTone gets close enough to each amp's sound for live work. And the POD makes it so easy to record, I don't know how I ever got along without it.

When I finally scrape enough dough together, I'm planning on buying a Line6 Variax guitar - it's a solid-body that 'models' a bunch of vintage guitars as well as acoustic, banjo and sitar sounds. That would come in extremely handy for my gigging and recording, as I could probably carry a few less guitars to gigs. :)
