I never had a flu shot, and then just after Xmas in 1999 I came down with a doozy. 104 degree fever, was absolutely miserable, couldn't do anything for a week. Just barely managed to observe some of the Y2K fizzle.
Since then, I have gotten one every year, and not had the flu. Better safe than sorry. Plus contrary to what another poster said, I am pretty sure there are several strains in each flu shot, helps keep your immune system fine-tuned for whatever odd critter it might come in contact with.
