it was banned when it came out... it pushed the parameters of violence in the early 70's & certainly pissed a lot of people off.

SD definitely has a more sparse style, which I personally like.

I think Deliverance had a more broad approach in its style, which could account for its popularity. Yeah, you've gotta admire a film that can deliver a message & play on a marketable level. That, of course, is no small feat for a director. But Boorman also shat out "Exorcist II: The Heretic." That was his ~what was he thinking~ moment :P
