I've had this Inspiron 5100 since Oct 03 and am still quite happy about it...I've NEVER had a hardware failure. However, I have run into some overheating problems in the past few months, mostly when I play resource-intensive computer games for 4+hours straight;) And that has improved since I finally got a can of compressed air and cleaned the cooling fan. If you only need one for work, you probably won't have to worry about overheating that much.

Edit: My uncle still has a Dell desktop from six or seven years ago, maybe longer. It's a P2 266 MHz if it gives you any idea. And it still works--only now is his CD drive showing a hint of unreliability.
