I had to put my cat to sleep today...

I've written about her a few times before. Her name is Nightmare and I had her since she showed up at my doorstep, 7 months old and pregnant. That was over 14 years ago. I kept one of her litter who I've also had all that time.

She developed hyperthyroid a little over a year ago and went from 10 pounds (very fat for her little frame) to 5 pounds. She had been on medication and IV fluids which seemed to help these past couple of months. This morning, however, I went to give them food and fresh water, and Nightmare was just lying there, listless. When she got up and walked, she was unbalanced, and when she finally got to the water bowl, she just hung her head over it and just sat there, not drinking or eating. I left for work, then came back at noon to check on her. No change. She had such a glazed look in her eyes, and she had stopped purring completely -- this is a cat that purred constantly before.

I took her to the vet, and wouldn't you know... new vet. My regular one was off today, and I guess this new one is her new partner. The new vet was very understanding and gentle. Nightmare went very peacefully.

Now I have to go home and see how Smoke, Nightmare's son, is going to do without his mom. He's 14 and hyperthyroid, too, but in much better health than she was. He is going to go have the radioiodine treatment in about a month, hopefully. My dog was even subdued when i was home at noon before I took Nightmare to the vets. Animals know.

Thanks to everyone who has given me support over Nightmare's condition in the past few months. I really appreciate it.

Peace,
Bella
