No live organism can continue for long to exist sanely under conditions of absolute reality; even larks and katydids are supposed, by some, to dream.
Hill House, not sane, stood by itself against its hills, holding darkness within; it had stood so for eighty years and might stand for eighty more.
Within, walls continued upright, bricks met neatly, floors were firm, and doors were sensibly shut; silence lay steadily against the wood and stone of Hill House, and whatever walked there, walked alone.
Yes, I vote for The Haunting. The original from 1963 directed by Robert Wise, NOT that over-the-top piece of crap by Jan de Bont a couple of years ago.
In fact, if you want a great example of why modern movies suck so bad, watch the two of them back-to-back. Wise went for nuance and got it. The whole movie fills you with a creepy feeling that, any second, you're going to feel a chilly finger on your face.
I recently saw the original...on a rainy night here in L.A., for the perfect mood. And that damn thing STILL scared me! I'm a complete skeptic and non-believer when it comes to the supernatural (including religion).
The re-make? Pffft! It's about as scary as a 5-yr-old in a Halloween costume.
