6. Golf is such a great game |

I grew up next to a shabby, scruffy public course outside of Boston. Became friends with the youngest son of the pro, said pro promptly putting me to work behind the snack bar and on the maintennance crew as payment for having me underfoot. I wound up working there for ten years, doing everything - pro shop, snack bar, grounds crew, etc.
I also got to play every day for free. Golf teaches mental discipline, temper control, hand-to-eye coordination, patience, and when you carry your bag for 18 holes on a hot day, gives you a pretty good workout.
It saddens me greatly that it is an exclusive game, one that is hard to play regularly if you don't have money. A good set of clubs can run you $500 at a bare minimum, and the balls are $4 a pop, and to play a round at the most meager public course can be $40.
