The average anglo-saxon freeman had more civil rights (including the right to petition the nobles) prior to the Norman conquest (beginning in 1066) than did the anglo-norman people after the signing of the Magna Carta. It seems the feudal system brought to England by the Normans set back human rights on that island for many centuries.
