If I can type through tears, I'll let you know that this kitty is as lucky as they come. To have you love him so much and give him so much care, and try so hard to make him better, means that you've done everything you ever could have. If we could all be so lucky as your little friend.

Al #1 (the #1 was retroactive, when I got al #2) had leukemia. He went to the vet many times and took medicine to make him better, but it always wore off and he'd return to being a bag of bones. This happened many times, and my parents (I was a teenager at the time) decided to have him put to sleep. I knew it was the right thing, but not a decision I could have ever made. It was so hard to see him suffer.

Al #2 was the best friend I've ever had (my avatar is not him, but looks like him). He got in a big fight that broke his shoulder blade. The docs said he'd never be able to walk again, but it healed, and he did, but with arthritis. He couldn't run as fast or climb up the porch, but he still loved me. Still, one day, when I was away in grad school, Al walked into the woods to die. No one even knew he was sick. best friend I've ever had.

I can't pretend to know what someone else's love feels like, but I do know that what you're going through is incredibly painful, and that you've done all that you can. You should be so proud to have been such a good cat parent/friend. If you hadn't been, it could never hurt this bad.
