8. We had a Fred too.
Fred and Betty lived in the apartment next door to my future wife.
I was a young hellish 'fighter pilot' (ANG) just out for a good time and dating the girl next door to them.

It was one of those swinging singles apartment complexes.
Fred and Betty were kind of the parents-in-residence.
Oh, and we weren't exactly 'dating'.
I had moved in with Miz t.
We were co-habitating.
That was NOT done back in the 60s.
Not in Alabama, anyway.

One night, at a particularly boozey poolside party, Fred backed me up against a wall.
"I want to know exactly WHAT your intentions are with (Miz t.)."
Hunh? Shit!
"What do you mean?"
"I mean that she's a very nice young woman and I don't want anything bad to happen to her. Get me?"
"Oh...um...OK. Um...well...I like her a lot."
"Look, I think you need to do a lot more than LIKE her."

Fred made me stop and really think.
What the hell was I doing?
What WERE my plans?

A short time later I proposed.
That was almost 40 years ago and we're still together.
And I credit Fred for making me stop and think.

Here's to Freds.
