The entire legal system still uses the idea of enforced truth through placing your hand on the bible. In reality, it's the honor system... and people lie through their teeth. The only way to get around that is to prove otherwise: innocent until proven guilty.

There would have to be some form of trial for Feeney (which will never happen). Even assuming it did, the Republican elite would easily concoct some form of story that makes Curtis some seedy lowlife - the least credible witness possible. Unlike the Democrats, all they need to do is repeat it until the public believes, at which point everyone caves. It worked in the Kennedy investigations.

Edit: The only beacon of hope I see here is the Shiavo case; the public thought the Republicans were full of it no matter how many times they spewed their bile.
