Most of what we see from Iraq is second-hand...either from what the Pentagon wants us to see/hear or from Iraqi stringers who can move about the country. American journalists are hunkered down inside the Green Zone and rarely travel outside unless it's in an armed American convoy.
They can see and hear the explosions in Baghdad and know there's things going on, but it's very dangerous to do any real reporting or verification. Two weeks ago, C-SPAN had several reporters who discussed how American journalists are targeted (didn't say by whom) and that they couldn't stay in one location for more than 15 minutes.
One mentioned that his paper actually paid over $30,000 just for an armed escort to the airport. That's one hell of a cab ride.
This serves the Pentagon and this regime just fine. What they can't film or report directly isn't happening.
