How is that against Biblical principles? Aren't Christians supposed to render unto Caesar? Didn't Jesus befriend and defend tax-collectors?
Thomas Jefferson was a Deist who thought large portions of the Bible was written by madmen. He also thought the Bible was filled with so much crap that he cut out everything except what Jesus said to fashion his own Bible.
Washington almost never went to church and the few appearances he did make his preacher commented on how Washington wasn't paying attention.
Madison is quoted as saying that government and religion are purer the farther they are apart.
Thomas Paine the inspiration for the revolution wrote a book called "The Age of Reason" to repudiate the Bible and the divinity of Jesus.
Ben Franklin was a member of the HellFire Club, a club in France that rejected Christianity and took part in Hedonism.
