Edwards vows to win West Virginia in 2008
Associated Press
Friday, March 30, 2007

-----
Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards made a campaign stop Thursday in Charleston to raise funds and discuss labor issues with leaders. Edwards, 53, is a former U.S. senator from North Carolina and the 2004 running mate of presidential candidate John Kerry. Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards says he plans to win West Virginia, a state that President Bush won in the last two elections, in 2008.

"I've spent a lot of time in West Virginia over the years," Edwards said during a four-hour stop in Charleston on Thursday. "If I am the Democratic nominee for president, I fully intend to win West Virginia."

Edwards spoke Thursday with members of the United Mine Workers and the AFL-CIO at a Charleston hotel and then attended a fundraiser.

The former North Carolina senator praised the UMW for working to improve safety in coal mines, and lauded all unions' efforts to "strengthen the middle class (because) it strengthens America."

Edwards also said he planned to tell his wife, Elizabeth, that prayers were being offered in West Virginia for her. The couple announced last week that Elizabeth Edwards' cancer had returned and was incurable.

"Everybody's been so incredibly kind," he said.

Edwards said everyone deserves the same level of care as his wife, citing the high costs of her treatment.

"I am the only candidate with a universal health care plan," he said.
