Who are the Democratic bigots? |
|
Let's face it, there are some Americans who believe a black person or woman can't win the presidency. There are some who probably believe it would not be good for the country if such a person won. Who are these Democrats? My guess is they are mostly moderate and conservative ones. While ultimately any Democratic nominee will be able to count on the liberals to support them in the general election, in order for Obama or Clinton to win the nomination, they must appeal to those who are nervous about their race or gender. As a result, they are more focused on reaching moderates than liberals.
Edwards, as a white male, has the luxury of forsaking his actual voting record (which is no better than Obama's and hardly better than Hillary's) and reaching out to the liberals, knowing full well that many of the others will naturally gravitate towards him. In effect, Edwards is benefiting from institutionalized racism and sexism. That doesn't make him bad. It makes him smart. But, we should also keep in mind how our nation's prejudices are influencing the election and attempting to preserve the shameful 230-year-old legacy of white male rule. What's sad is that many liberals don't seem to understand the need for affirmative action in this primary season.
Go Obama! Go Clinton!
