Very different. I have a friend from Alabama who moved to NYC, which is where I first met her. She says what she did before moving was actually study how to speak with less of an accent by copying TV newscasters. There is a notable softness to her speech, so you know she's not a native New Yorker, but it's very slight. I know I pick up local inflection wherever I am for any amount of time, but I wouldn't have thought of actively changing it. My friend said it would have to be done in New York or Washington if you want to succeed in a job, although that wasn't always the case. Well, she's a whole lot more successful than I have ever been, that's for sure.
