Yes, I know, he's too old, too infirm, in too much trouble. All that is true. But it should still feel odd that the Republicans have no incumbent in the running. It doesn't.
Of course, Cheney is no ordinary VP. And I think that is the crux of why it doesn't feel odd. Really, everybody knows that Cheney has been the real president for the last seven years. But he couldn't run for it openly, because that isn't the way he wants to govern. He likes to do things in the shadows.
But it is quite astonishing that the Republican party let this happen to it. Allowing Cheney to pick himself as VP (doesn't the Presidential nominee usually pick their own running mate?) has only disadvantaged the GOP in the long run.
It seems there is no level on which Bush has not been a mistake.
