that's not a quality that loses elections. George W. Bush was/is very polarizing. Ronald Reagan was very polarizing. Bill Clinton was very polarizing by '96.
And in our modern world, EVERY candidate will be polarizing. The game has gotten so tough, the attacks so hard, that by the time the election comes around, roughly 50% of the voters will hate the other candidate.
