Because the primary challenge, well intentioned as it was, didn't have a prayer of suceeding if Lieberman chose to run anyway, and getting stepped on by the party would only push Lieberman farther out. Which it has.
Trust me, I hated Lieberman LONG before it became popular to do so, but I completely understand and approve of why the Clintons, Kerry, Obama, and everybody else backed him in the primary. They wanted to keep him tight to the breast of the party.
And whether we like it or not, Lieberman IS loyal, after a fashion. If he really wanted to backstab us, all it would take is a word, and he could switch the Senate back to Republican control. He's chosen not to.
