72. I honestly don't understand people objecting to
the idea of reaching out to "people of faith," much as I despise that term. It is symptomatic of the Democratic Party's electoral myopia that it feels it can get along without it, or to surrender it because the "faith community" (another gawdawful term) seems more closely aligned with Robertson and Falwell than with Jim Wallis and Michael Lerner.

The fact of the matter is that if we choose to reach out to "people of faith," we have to do it with authenticity and not look like we are bowing to purely political pressures; people can tell all too easily. Sen Obama gave a great speech about faith and politics that articulated the problems and possibilities very well.
