Whether Senator Clinton knows it or not (and her recent remarks suggest she might know more than she lets on) she's doing yeoman's work as assassination insurance for the Big O. She's doing the exact same thing Dan Quayle and Dick Cheney have done: positioning herself as an even worse alternative (from the psycho's point of view), thus ensuring that the people who can't stand the #1 person aren't tempted to do something batshit crazy.

Whether or not that qualifies her to be a running mate is an entirely different question.
