50. Right. Any other candidate, especially a woman coming out of barely two years
in the Senate would have been laughed out of the race before even starting.

The party leaders - mostly Ted Kennedy - loathed Bill Clinton who achieved what no other Democrat, including Kennedy, has: being elected and re-elected for the first time since FDR.

An unknown "Bubba" who came and took over Washington. Under whose administration the huge deficit was replaced with a surplus, and income increased across all economic levels. Who nominated two - OK, moderate - Supreme Court Justices that allow us to even dream on restoring the balance to the Supreme Court.

Ted Kennedy and Daschle cannot stomach this, never could. So they went in search of the un-Clinton candidate. Any candidate, and with their luck, they found a charismatic, articulate semi African American who is not Al Sharpton or Jesse Jackson, who has no track record - negative or positive - who has been careful not to say anything specific so that all of his supporters, especially young, inexperienced voters can project on him what they hope and who, if they actually show up in November, will be the first to be disappointed when they realize that no one can be everything to everyone.
