I don't imagine many people voted for Obama/Biden because of Biden. On the other hand, very few will have refrained from doing so because of him, either. I suspect he was picked to be an inoffensive, uncontroversial, safe pair of hands, which he did fine.

On the other hand, what he clearly does have is experience - I suspect that he'll be a lot of help when it comes to actually governing.

Palin, incidentally, was the exact opposite - clearly picked with winning the election in mind, rather than with what would happen afterwards.
