LEXINGTON, Ky. — Hours after his former fiancee was found shot to death in Lexington, former Republican gubernatorial candidate Steve Nunn has been found shot in Barren County, according to Jay Blanton, spokesman for Gov. Steve Beshear.

Amanda Ross was found Friday morning in the parking lot of Opera House Square Town Homes at 541 West Short Street in Lexington. Fayette County Coroner Gary Ginn confirmed that Ross died of a gunshot wound. She was pronounced dead at 7:09 a.m. at University of Kentucky Hospital.

Nunn, who lost the 2003 Republican primary to Ernie Fletcher, who later went on to be the first Republican governor of Kentucky since Nunn's father in 1967, and Ross had a history of domestic conflict. Nunn had been deputy secretary of health and human services under Beshear, a Democrat that Nunn endorsed over Fletcher, but resigned after the domestic violence incident.
