the two reasons Torre may indeed leave are Mel Stottlemeyer and Brian Cashman . . . Mel was the one guy in the dugout of Torre's generation, a guy he could talk to as a peer . . . and Cashman was the guy who ran interference for Torre with Steinbrenner and the Tampa mafia . . . Mel said today that he won't be back, and Cashman will likely leave as well . . . that leaves Torre pretty much stranded without his support and without his buffer . . .

on the other hand, it's not easy to walk away from $13 million . . . though he's probably set for life, and could likely make plenty of money through speeches, tv work, and writing a book . . . and without the headaches . . .
