No, they couldn't.

Page 2 has uncovered the deal with devil that the three teams signed in the summer of '07 and needless to say it has a few holes in it that might just indicate that the end is nigh for Beantown. Oh, in case you're wondering, Boston Bruins owner Jeremy Jacobs was also approached to see if he had an interest, but reportedly said the one penny retainer fee was "too rich for my blood."
