Provo district considers club policy
Advertisements [?]
After a Gay-Straight Alliance club was approved at Provo High School last week, the Provo City School District is considering a policy that would regulate school clubs.

The club received approval last week and will finalize the startup on Wednesday, said Superintendent Randy Merrill.

<snip>

Merrill said Principal Sam Ray's questions about whether state and federal law allowed the clubs prompted the district to fashion a policy after Granite School District's policy, which has a Gay-Straight Alliance club in one of its schools.

It would require anyone who wants to form any sort of club to apply to the district. Parental consent would be required for noncurricular clubs, and the policy would disallow any club that is "deemed vulgar and/or lewd and therefore is inconsistent with the fundamental values of public education" or that "could subject students to harassment or persecution." A club application could be denied to "maintain boundaries of social appropriate behavior."
