People can't do anything personally about the other things. They're frustrated and feel powerless. People don't like to feel powerless. Voting against gay marriage gives them a feeling of power. If you can't defeat your real enemy, pick on someone you can defeat.

You see this all the time. Take someone who has no power and give him/her a little bit of power. They go crazy with it. There is nothing worse than a powerless person who has been given a smidgen of power -- even if it's in a very small area.
