I remember the night the Supreme Court handed the presidency to Bush. I was sitting right here in this room with my husband beside me when we heard the news. I'd been feeling off-kilter all day, but in that moment it was as if the world shifted around me, as if I/we were being thrust into an alternate reality. I remember my husband saying, and his voice sounded far away and like he was speaking from underwater, "Well, he's so dumb he'll just end up being a lame duck." When he said that, the tears began to fall from my eyes, and I remember saying, "No. He is going to take us to war. This man is will bring death." This wasn't a conscious thought. It just welled up from within me. I knew it then. I had seen it in his eyes.

Like the rest of you, I did my best to prevent it. Protested, wrote letters, talked to people everywhere I went. But it happened anyway, and on the day the first bombs fell, I felt the horror. All I could do was cry. For days.
