"At one point I was going to be a professional caddy, that was my big life plan," he said.

Mr. Nicholson's fortunes changed 10 years ago when he moved to Boston to live with a former girlfriend. While working at a windsurfing shop in nearby Cambridge, he became friendly with Mr. Kerry, a regular customer.

"When I got to Boston if you asked me who the two senators were from Massachusetts, I couldn't have told you," recalled Mr. Nicholson, who holds dual citizenship owing to his mother's U.S. heritage.

The next summer, he landed a job as a caddy at a Nantucket golf course where Mr. Kerry was a member. Just over a year later, Mr. Kerry offered Mr. Nicholson an internship, but he declined, opting instead to take a job caddying at Augusta National in Georgia.

In the fall of 2000, he changed his mind and went to Washington.
