Experts doubt sweep likely

Georgia Republicans are out to try to tighten their hold on state government this year by going after Democrats in down-ballot elected offices.

The GOP wants "to operate state government from top to bottom," House Speaker Glenn Richardson (R-Hiram) said in an interview this week.

"We think we can do it more efficiently and more effectively, and more in line with the desire of a majority of the people."

Republicans have controlled the governor's office and state Senate since 2003, the Georgia House since 2005.

But they've not been able to claim some important and historically Democratic offices — attorney general, secretary of state, and labor and agriculture commissioners.
