the Non-Proliferation Treaty is essentially dead already. I would argue that we should look the other way if Iran tries to develop nuclear warheads to achieve a balance of power in the region. If both sides have nuclear warheads, then the doctrine of MAD is invoked. Nobody would be willing to go to war anymore without fear of causing "mutually assured destruction." If anything, the MAD doctrine might actually stabilize the region and prevent big players from making reckless gambles that could result in annihilation. It's the reason why the USA and the USSR didn't wipe out the entire planet in a stupid bid to see who is "king of the mountain."
